You see a horse with your eyes,
but you feel a horse with your soul.

I did not grow up around horses, but the few times that I was around horses, I felt an intense spiritual connection to them.
My supervisor for my counseling practicum had these beautiful therapy dogs. They would be in her sessions and help her clients with their feelings.
My dogs were rescue dogs and would never have passed the therapy dog tests!
In 2013, I had been counseling clients with mood disorders and was at a loss of how to help them.
I had tried every kind of therapy I could offer in
an office setting! My clients were not making progress. It was then that I thought again of horses and how they could assist me in helping these particular clients.
I completed training to include horses in my counseling sessions. I have had kids, teenagers and adults spend time with horses, leading and grooming them and sharing some of their personal feelings with them. In 2019, I flew to Canada for a women’s retreat and spent time with a 28-horse herd on a mountain with 80 acres of beautiful land and trees. I sat in the grass and read the letter that I had written to my abuser out loud. When I was done, one of the horses walked up to me, stood over me and gently put his nose on my head. It felt so comforting and validating! With having anxiety, my mind is constantly thinking. Being with horses is the only place where my mind stops, and I can just be. I am present in that moment and able to enjoy the sunlight, the smell of the horses, and the soft fur under my fingertips. The healing that I have felt from spending time with horses has been life changing! I want to share that magic with others.
When coaching or counseling clients, I invite them to spend time with my horses. As we walk from my office to the pasture, I check in with my client about how he/she has been doing, and what goals or issues he/she is wanting to address during our session. The client can observe the horses outside of the fence or enter the pasture and spend time with them. The client may feel drawn to a particular horse and can spend time with that horse, petting him or grooming him. The client can choose to talk or remain silent during the session.
